7th Graders Disect Worms!

External and internal anatomy was observed by the 7th Graders as they dissected the Earthworm during the last week before the Thanksgiving break.  Earthworms are important to our ecosystems as decomposers, but the students were amazed that there is a lot more inside a worm than they previously thought. Students compared and contrasted the Earthworm physiology to other phyla’s of animals, and were surprised to find out they contain a gizzard like birds. This generated a lot of discussion on the evolution of our simple worm and the varieties of worms we see in our environment.  The students were filled with terror at the idea of dissecting the worm, but now we are brimming with anticipated excitement at our next dissection, the Fish, sometime in February!
